Understanding Power Units

Power is the rate at which energy is transferred or converted. Different industries use different units to express power. This converter bridges the gap between electrical, mechanical, and thermal measurements.

Watts (W) & Kilowatts (kW)

The standard unit of power in the International System of Units (SI). It is commonly used for electrical appliances.

Horsepower (HP)

Legacy unit for measuring engine power. There are slight variations (Imperial vs. Metric), but the general standard used here is the Mechanical/Imperial Horsepower (approx 746 Watts).

BTU/hour

British Thermal Unit. Primarily used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) to describe the heat output of a furnace or air conditioner. 1 BTU is roughly the energy required to raise 1 pound of water by 1°F.
