Understanding Moles and Grams
In chemistry, the mole is a standard unit of measurement for amount of substance. It provides a bridge between the atomic scale (atoms and molecules) and the macroscopic scale (grams and liters). Converting between moles and grams is essential for preparing solutions and performing chemical reactions.
The Conversion Formulas
To convert, you always need the Molar Mass (MW) of the substance, which is the mass of one mole of that substance (usually found on the periodic table).
- To find Mass (Grams): Multiply the number of moles by the molar mass.
$Mass = Moles \times MW$ - To find Moles: Divide the mass in grams by the molar mass.
$Moles = Mass / MW$
