Pro Tips

Post Spacing: Standard spacing is 6 to 8 feet. Wider spacing requires stronger rails.

Hole Depth: Dig holes 1/3 the height of the post above ground. For a 6ft fence, dig 2ft deep.

Concrete: Always leave a slight crown at the top of the concrete hole to prevent water pooling around the post.

How many bags of concrete per post?

For a standard 4x4 post (0.33ft x 0.33ft) in a 2ft hole (0.67ft deep):

  • Volume ≈ 0.07 cubic feet.
  • One 80lb bag yields ~0.60 cubic feet.
  • Therefore, one 80lb bag can fill roughly 8-9 standard post holes.
Do I need posts for gates?

Yes. Gates require structural support. You typically need two posts for every gate (one on each hinge side). This calculator adds 2 posts per gate to the total count automatically.

How do I calculate for a circular fence?

For a circular area, calculate the Circumference ($C = 2 \times \pi \times Radius$). Enter that value into the "Length" field and set "Width" to 0 to simulate a straight run of that total length.
