Understanding Female Body Shapes

In the fashion industry, body shapes are often categorized into four primary classes. This calculator uses the algorithm based on the study by Lee et al. (2005) to determine your shape.

1. Apple Shape (Inverted Triangle)

Characterized by broader shoulders and a larger bust compared to hips. Individuals with apple shapes carry weight around the waist. While some associate this with higher health risks, it is a common silhouette for many.

2. Banana / Rectangle Shape

A leaner frame where the waist measurement is generally less than 9 inches smaller than the hip measurement. This is often a "straight up and down" silhouette.

3. Pear / Spoon Shape

Characterized by hip measurements that are significantly greater than bust measurements. This shape is typical in the bottom-heavy silhouette. It is generally considered healthy, though high WHR can still indicate risks.

4. Hourglass / X Shape

Described as the "ideal" silhouette in fashion. This shape features bust and hip measurements that are nearly equal in size, with a significantly narrower waist.

Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) & Health

The Body Shape Calculator calculates your WHR because while shape is for fashion, WHR is a vital indicator of health. The distribution of your body fat matters more than the amount.

Why "Apple" Shapes Face Higher Risks

People with "apple" bodies (high WHR) carry visceral fat around the abdomen. This fat is metabolically active and increases the risk of conditions like Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and hypertension.

WHR and Fertility

Studies have shown correlations between WHR and fertility. Women with a WHR between 0.70 and 0.79 generally have better pregnancy rates. Men with a WHR around 0.9 are often found to be more fertile and have lower risks of prostate and testicular cancer.

Scientific Context

This tool helps distinguish between aesthetic goals and medical reality. If your WHR falls within the danger zone (e.g., > 0.85 for women), it serves as a warning sign to consult a healthcare provider, even if you fit a "standard" fashion profile.
